Author/photographer Gerald Hinde has an impressive set of awards to his name and he is a well-known wildlife photographer.

South Africa has a rich supply of game parks, 21 national game parks, and a further impressive array of provincial and private ones, despite the fact that we have only just over half of the international norm of 10% of protected land.  Hinde has selected just 20 of these to feature in this little 80 page book.  His selection has been mapped at the beginning of the book by Martin Endermann, and the first park I looked for just happened to be Mapungubwe National Park “B” and the mapping is slightly too far to the east.  The park is on the confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo Rivers and stretches to Botswana, Zimbabwe and South Africa.

The parks covered in this book are the Kruger National Park, Mapungubwe National Park, Pilansberg National Park (not a SANParks area), Marekele National Park, Madikwe Game Reserve, Gold Gate Highlands National Park, Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park, Ithala Game Reserve, Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Park, Isimangaliso Wetland Park, Karoo National Park, Mountain Zebra National Park, Addo Elephant National Park, Garden Route National Park, De Hoop Nature Reserve, Table Mountain National Park, West Coast National Park, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Augrabies Falls National Pzark, and the IAi-IAis/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park.

The photographs have been carefully selected to show the diversity, the scenery, the wildlife from the big seven through to little mopane worms, our coral reefs, our beautiful birds, the little dassie and a mouse as well as the wonders of the human intervention such as the bridge at Storms River Mouth.  As I recall my own visits I am once again thrilled by having had the opportunity to visit and enjoy.

The book is small, light and inexpensive, a perfect souvenir of a trip to South Africa where one has been fortunate enough to see wild animals, or a lovely coffee table book for any home or office.
